Adventure Time: Newnes Shale Oil Ruins

Near Wolgan Valley Distance: 7.5km Duration: Around 2.5 hours A magical walk we did in winter, with crystallized frost on the grass and an interesting assortment of ruins from the old mining days. You've got to be pretty self sufficient for this one; Newnes itself is one hotel and a road - that's pretty much it - so bring lots of snacks and water, more than you think you'll need as you're a long way from anywhere if you get delayed! There's interpretive signage everywhere so you can see what's what. You can just explore a little area or do the entire site if you feel like it. We were lucky enough to see a wombat in broad daylight, hanging around the nearby campground and generally nonplussed about us staring at him. The kids got really close before he skittered back into his burrow! This was a really lovely walk with something everywhere you look to keep the kids occupied. The ruins are scattered on the side of a s...

Adventure Time: Middle Head Forts

Where: Middle Head, off Chowder Bay Rd Distance: 5.5km Duration: a bit over 2 hours Richie comes up with all the good ideas. Today we decided to go east for a change, heading towards the harbour to explore middle head forts. Complete with underground tunnels dating back to the 1870s and lots of gun turrets, ammunition stores and lookout points, it was a fantastic place to bring the kids. Very little was 'out of bounds' and they could go in around and over all the old structures, which kept them interested for a couple of hours.  The forts were built in the 1870's, used later during WWII, and the area is still active today with HMAS Penguin naval hospital located at the site. Although it was mid morning on a weekend, we only saw a handful of other people, and had lots of space to run around and explore. Apart from a few sketchy cliff edges and former ammunition stores to fall into like the one below, it was a great place for the little peo...

Adventure Time: Fortress Ridge Lookout and Dr Darks Cave

Near Blackheath, NSW Distance: 6.8km Duration: 2.5 hours Today we explored Fortress Lookout and the well-hidden Dr Dark's cave. Although the kids alternated between 'I hate life' and 'bush walking is awesome', they did great on this very steep and scrubby track! Heading along Mt Hay road we parked at a small parking area signposted as Fortress Ridge. Through a locked gate and up a steep rocky fire trail was Fortress Ridge Trail proper. At the end point of this track is a breathtaking vista, with the ground covered in scratchy low heath that slopes down gently -then all of a sudden you realise you're on the edge of a sheer drop, so don't let the kids run ahead on this bit! There are magnificent views down into the Grose valley and down to your left in the picture below you can see the (smallish) Medusa falls which I believe flow into Arethusa canyon. Backtracking from the lookout, keep your eyes peeled for the nondescript side trail to D...

Adventure Time: Box Vale Tramway Walking Track

Near Mittagong Distance: 8.7km return Duration: ~ 4 hours We were looking for a peaceful adventure on ANZAC day and Richie found this nice little walk on the other side of Mittagong.  Box Vale walking track follows an old train cutting with a tunnel near the end, and passes some historic coal mining bits and pieces through lovely cool southern highlands forest. In autumn it was absolutely full of a myriad of frilly, lumpy and blobby toadstools which were fun to photograph. The tramway line was built in 1888 to carry coal mined in Nattai Gorge to the main line at Mittagong. The line passes through several cuttings and a tunnel, and ends at the "incline", where coal was brought up from the gorge. It was closed in 1896 and the tramway abandoned, and was later opened as a walking track in 1996. And we hit a milestone today... 4 hours walking, nearly 9km - the furthest we've gone as a family, yet there was no fighting, no whining; they had fun and collected ro...
